Dean grew up and learned to sail as a teenager in southern New England on Little Narragansett Bay, just to the west of Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

Little Narragansett Bay is where the Pawcatuck River, flowing south, meets Fishers Island Sound. In the middle of the Sound sits Latimer Lighthouse, marking the intersection of the Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York state boundaries. Latimer Lighthouse guides mariners around Latimer Reef and provides a navigational reference point through this deceptively treacherous body of water.

Latimer Lighthouse has been providing sailors a navigational beacon in Fishers Island Sound since 1884.
